It’s Race Morning!

Isn’t is glorious to be able to say that?!  I’m following the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg warmup on and I can’t stop smiling.  It’s going to be a great day and PLEASE let us have only racing to talk about today.  I don’t want to know what Beaux Barfield ate for breakfast, or what Mark Miles is listening to on his iPod right now, or which members of the Hulman-George family had a dispute last night.  I only want to hear about how strong Simona de Silvestro looks now that she’s driving a Chevy-powered car, or how impressive Tristan Vautier is, or how Andretti Autosport is looking strong again this year.

There are always interesting storylines to watch during each race weekend.  In no particular order, here are some of the things I’ll be keeping an eye out for today:

  • Will Power on the pole-nothing new about that, but it will be interesting to see how Will rebounds from yet another IndyCar championship slipping away during the last race of the season.  I expect him to be strong today but let’s admit it, we’re all hoping for a chance to see those infamous double birds!
  • WHAT is going on with Ganassi?  They didn’t qualify very well at all, with only Dario in the top half of the starting lineup.
  • How will Ryan Hunter-Reay do now that he’s broken out of the underdog role?  Everyone now knows he’s a force to be reckoned with and that #1 on his car will be a constant reminder to the other drivers. (Not that they really need a reminder, of course.)
  • In related news, how awesome is it to see the #1 back on a car?  I am so glad Ryan and Andretti Autosport decided to make the change, and equally glad they found a way to preserve the special meaning the #28 has for Ryan.

I’m sure a lot more stories will develop throughout the the race and I personally cannot wait to see it!  My prediction for today’s finish: Helio P1, Hinch P2, Simona P3.  I don’t know why, and part of me hopes I’m wrong and Marco is up there somewhere, but that’s the prediction I’m going to go with.  It’s sure to be wrong but either way, IndyCar is back and I could not be happier!
